Unfinished Bridges
Driving back along the lonelier but infinitely less jammed road, I began thinking back on the recent article I wrote on how God speaks to us in different ways. With that in mind, I began to look around a bit (without compromising my driving safety) and sort of open my eyes to see what God may be telling me. I always found great pleasure in observing the vastness of the skies or the beautiful green scenery of flora on either side of the road. However, one particular scene caught my eye – an elevated highway, completed on both sides of the main road, but with a huge gap in the middle. Immediately, this phrase came to mind – an unfinished bridge.
Contemplating on this metaphor, I began to think of what unfinished bridges mean in life, in relationships, in youth, in church, in care groups and friendships. I believe that there are unfinished bridges all around us, gaps and holes which keep us from being connected properly.
Take for example the transition from Sunday School to Youth to College/Uni to Young Adults. How do those coming up fit into the next level? It is not an easy transition, and many a time, if the bridge is not completed, one may simply turn back, or worse, fall over the uncompleted bridge.
Similarly, there is also a very crucial gap when a newcomer steps into the Youth Group, a Care group or even the church. Who will build a bridge to get to them? Or will they simply be turned off, and walk away, unable to connect with the love of God that should be available to them.
At the family level, are there not unfinished bridges between parents and children, brothers and sisters? How can there be true love and unity in the home if these bridges are not overcome?
On the home front or even in the office, there are also many unfinished bridges. Some neighbors or colleagues we pass by several times a week, maybe even a day. Yet there is a cold gap that prevents us going more than a simple hi or good morning which even in itself can be difficult to utter for some of us.
I believe that God is calling each one of us to start finishing our bridges. Be it at home, at work, at Youth, Care Groups or anywhere at all, let us be aware of the unfinished bridges around us, and start praying for strength and grace to begin building. It will take effort, a little embarrassment, and a need to overcome our fear, but let us take joy in this, that we are doing it for Jesus.
Youth, let us try to be friendlier to our younger Sunday School brothers and sisters
College and Uni students, let us try our best to connect to our brothers and sisters in the Youth
Young adults, let us care more for the College/Uni Students and Youth, and be patient with them
Family members, Parents, Grandparents, brothers and sisters let us love each other more and share more with each other
Neighbors, colleagues, let us make an extra effort to be a friend, no more a stranger.
Church and Care group members, let us make time to look out for a newcomer, to make them feel welcome, truthfully and not superficially.
May the Lord help us complete the unfinished bridges in our lives by the power and grace of His Spirit, and spur us on to complete every good work in Christ Jesus.
God bless,
Jason
