The Runaway Bride

The Runaway Bride: A challenge to the Bride of Christ to return to her true calling

“Do you love me?” the bridegroom asked his bride for the fifth time, his voice filled with intense passion and emotion, yet tinged with a deep sadness coming from within his gentle heart. Filled with shame, his beautiful bride first looked sadly at him, and then, trembling with tears in her eyes, turned away from his penetrating gaze. She knew she could not live up to the sacrifice His love demanded of her.

On Sunday, 9th October 2005, we had the tremendous privilege to have the Footstool Players present their awesome play, the Runaway Bride, at Cornerstone Doulos Church in Bandar Sunway. Embodied in seven short skits, Colin Kirton and his talented team of six produced a powerful drama highlighting with remarkable precision how the true Bride of Christ, His church, has fallen short of His glory today!

A brief description of the seven magnificent is as follows:-

The Wedding – At the beautiful wedding between the Lord and His bride, the bride comes in unprepared, flustered and ultimately unwilling to bear the time and commitment required in saying “I do”.

McChurch – Like a fast food restaurant, this powerfully symbolic skit pictures the customer-oriented church, carefully positioned to meet the needs and wants of affluent members of the congregation, yet strangely helpless or even apathetic towards the needs of the truly needy.

Pharisee Boot Camp – Under the watchful eye of a no-nonsense Holiness Instructor played expertly by Colin himself, a young recruit is drilled in the ways of the Pharisee- to gain merit by painstakingly detailed observance of every aspect of the law, with no tolerance for the weak.

The Untouchables – A broken, drunkard housewife, a depressed teenager who just had an abortion and an inconsolable young man dying of AIDS stand before the church today. Is there room in the Lord’s church for such as these today?

Mercy General – At the great Hospital Sinai, with state of the art facilities and the best doctors in the land, only the rich and healthy are welcomed. Yet, outside these white, clean walls, throngs of the sick lie dying, and none can reach the salvation within. However, there is a new doctor in town, and He goes out to the people, and it is His destiny to establish Mercy General!

Salt & Light - With expert use of limited props, the whole Footstool team get together to present a powerful narration of the true role of the Church today as the Salt and Light of the world.

Love Story – As a wonderfully fitting conclusion to the night, the Footstool Players end with a deeply touching adaptation of the love story between the prophet Hosea and his wayward wife, Gomer. Despite the frailty and filth of an unworthy bride who goes backs time and again to her old sinful ways, her loving bridegroom continues to pursue her with all his passion and might, and ultimately, gives up all he has for her.

At the end of the night, this powerful drama had left behind a powerful message for our church – to come back to the Lord as our true first love, to return to His grace once again, and let His power and love change us into the beautiful bride we are meant to be.

May the good Lord continue to bless the ministry of the Footstool Players abundantly from all His glorious riches in heaven, and spur them on to greater heights for the glory of His name. God bless you, love CDC.

( The Footstool Players have been ministering to the Body of Christ since May 2001 in providing dramatic productions of great quality and style with a mission towards challenging and encouraging the Malaysian church in matters of faith to the glory of God. In 2005, the Footstool players unveiled a whole new acting team consisting of Colin Kirton, Adrene Wong, Dorothy Chu and Ee Soon Wei, who come from three different churches in the Klang Valley. They are ably supported by sound technicians, Arvind and Steven. Their visit to CDC was their 14th out of 21 performances of Runaway Bride over nine weeks, and they end their schedule for the year at Kledang Community Chapel in Ipoh on October 30.
