Standing the Tides of Change

Standing the Tides of Change

In today’s age and time, change has never been so rapid, and uncertainty has become as much a certainty as death and taxes. In the face of the advance of terrorism and war, the breakdown of the marriage institution, and the fast changing, increasingly competitive business environment, the world has never been so insecure. One can no longer be sure how long his job, his marriage or even his own life will last.

In spite of this, we who have Christ do have confidence in the God who does not change, the God who is eternal - who was, who is and who is to come. No matter what the world or life may throw at us, we can face all things through Christ who strengthens us.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.

Firstly, in a world of turbulence and strife, it is our faith in God that keeps us focused not on what is seen, but what is unseen, that what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. We believe that God has power and sovereignty over all things, and nothing can happen part from God’s will. For Jesus said “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny, yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Let us believe that God is always in control.

Secondly, no matter what happens, let us always hope in God. Although disaster after disaster struck dear, old Job, he never lost hope in God, and continued to call on Him. In one of the most profound verses in the Bible, Job declared “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in Him!” Job, had lost everything, his wealth, his family, and even his health, and all he had left was his life. Even then, Job righteously declared that even if his life was taken away from him, he would nevertheless still hope in the Lord! Let us too, always hope in God, from the bottom of our hearts. No matter what disaster or disease may befall us, let us believe and hope that God will bring us through. As a wise man once said “God does not promise that bad things won’t happen, but He promises to be there with us when they do.”

Finally, and most importantly, let us put all our faith and all our hope in the love of God. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. And indeed, no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.

In conclusion, no matter what waves of life buffet us, no matter what challenges beset us, no matter what happens in all creation, let us always believe, let us always hope, and let us always love, and we will certainly stand the tides of change in the strength of our Lord Christ Jesus.
