4 keys to Prayer

4 keys to Prayer
FGB Chapter Jaya One/ Edmund Chan/ 14/3/12

Last Friday, FGB Chapter Jaya One had a time of inhouse testimonies and prayer. To start off the meeting, we were privileged to have our brother Edmund Chan, our FGB Central Regional Director share a few points regarding prayer.

To many Christians, prayer is mainly about asking God for help, but that is only one part of prayer. In fact, there are four main keys that can help us pray effectively.

Firstly, is Adoration. In prayer, we are to magnify God’s name, to declare how wonderful He is, how perfect the works of His hands. We must learn to declare that God is holy!

Secondly, we need to Confess our sins. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God says “ if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” In prayer, it is important to humble ourselves and seek God and turn from our wicked ways.

Thirdly, we need to Thank God. The Lord is always pleased with those who have a thankful spirit, and we need to practice thankfulness as a way of life, thanking God often in our prayers.

Finally, is Supplication. Praying for ourselves as well as interceding for others, for the nation, for the church.

Besides that, those of us who can speak in tongues should pray often in tongues, for it edifies ourselves (builds us up spiritually). Our God is a God who answers prayer.

One day, while having dinner with some friends in Kajang, I was invited for a trip to Melaka over the weekend as there was a spare room available. I had some regular meetings at church, but at the same time, I could afford to miss these meetings. Nevertheless, I had agreed to go immediately. The next morning, at my regular quiet time, I began to feel that I should rather go to the church meetings. I committed the matter to the Lord telling God “Lord, if it is your will, I will not go”. Surprisingly, my friend called up later and apologized for the rooms had been fully booked out. The Lord had made the decision easy for me.

Brother Charlie also shared a testimony with us.

Once, in the midst of a discussion with some friends, I was inspired to restart a regular Monday night prayer meeting which had stopped for some time. I sent out the invitation and ran my finger down the list, praying for each one that God would touch them to come. On 6th of March 2012, I was getting worried that no one would show up, but brothers started coming, and I was greatly encouraged. One question that I asked God is “What am I here for?” and I felt God tell me “to serve”. I am saved to serve. In John 15:16, Jesus said ”You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you”.

Brother Jason Tan also shared how God helped him find his 4 cheque books that had been lost for some time, and sister Jass also shared how the Lord was with her and helped her sell an important piece of land that had not even had a title yet. Brother Max also shared how much faith his mother Jass had. Being not familiar with KL, Max had told his mum how horrendous the jams in KL were. She said “Don’t worry, I will pray, you have faith”. Max told her “Well, you don’t know Cheras”. Somehow, amazingly, that morning during peak hour, the traffic was smooth all the way where they were going although it was all jammed up the opposite direction. Our God is God not only of big things but also the small things in life!
